A structured upper-limb hub covering tendon pain, bursitis, nerve compression, thumb arthritis, ganglion cysts and guided injection decisions.
Elbow, wrist and hand pain is often grouped together too loosely. Tendons, nerves, small joints, pulleys and fibrocartilage can all produce similar symptoms, so good diagnosis matters. This hub is designed to help patients separate common patterns such as golfer’s elbow, De Quervain’s, carpal tunnel syndrome, TFCC-related wrist pain and thumb base arthritis so treatment starts on the right track.
Medial elbow tendon overload and gripping pain.
Elbow bursitisSwollen olecranon bursa and pressure pain.
Wrist tendinopathyTendon overload around the wrist.
De Quervain’sThumb-side wrist pain and tendon sheath irritation.
Carpal tunnel syndromeMedian nerve numbness and night symptoms.
TFCC injuryUlnar-sided wrist pain and rotational loading problems.
Wrist osteoarthritisDegenerative wrist pain and stiffness.
Ganglion cystFluid-filled lump with or without pain.
Trigger fingerPainful clicking or locking of a finger.
Thumb base arthritisThumb CMC osteoarthritis and pinch pain.
Ultrasound is particularly useful in the elbow, wrist and hand because many of the key tissues are superficial and dynamic. We can assess tendons while they move, look for tendon sheath irritation, confirm whether a lump is a cyst, evaluate bursal swelling, and improve accuracy if a guided aspiration or injection is appropriate. It is not automatically required for every diagnosis, but it can make the pathway clearer when the examination leaves a real soft-tissue question.
Most elbow, wrist and hand problems still respond best to a sensible clinical plan rather than a quick fix. That usually means understanding which tasks are keeping the area irritated, modifying load in the short term, then rebuilding strength, tendon capacity, grip or movement confidence. Splints can help selected presentations. Guided injection is discussed when there is a clear target and a realistic reason why reducing pain or inflammation would allow rehabilitation to progress.
Book when pain, numbness, swelling or loss of confidence in the hand is affecting work, sleep, lifting, gym training or ordinary daily tasks. A clear diagnosis early usually saves time compared with months of trial-and-error self-management.
For suitable upper-limb cases we can assess, use ultrasound where it adds value, and help you decide whether the next step should be rehabilitation, splinting, guided injection or onward referral.
If pain is affecting sleep, walking, sport, work or confidence, the next step is usually a clear diagnosis rather than more guesswork. We offer physiotherapy, diagnostic ultrasound and image-guided injection pathways across our MSK clinics.
